3 Applications of AI in Surgery

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize surgery by increasing the precision and accuracy of surgical procedures, reducing the risk of human error, and improving patient outcomes.

AI is gradually changing the surgery practice with technological advancements in imaging, navigation, and robotic intervention. In this article, we find 3 applications of AI in surgery:

  1. Preoperative planning

  2. Intraoperative guidance

  3. Surgical robotics

1. Preoperative Planning

  • Anatomical classification of a single or a set of medical images or volumes of organs or lesions.

  • Detection of regions of interest.

  • Segmentation of medical images.

  • Registration is the spatial alignment between two medical images, volumes, or modalities.

2. Intraoperative Planning

  • 3D reconstruction from a single or limited amount of 2D images.

  • Endoscopic navigation

  • Tissue feature tracking

3. Surgical Robotics

The objective of AI is to boost the capability of surgical robotic systems, conduct decision-making, and perform the desired tasks with increased precision, safety, and efficiency.

The advancement of AI has been transforming modern surgery toward more precise and autonomous interventions.

AI is still in the early stages of development in surgery, and more research is needed to fully understand its potential impact.
