Exploring AI in Surgical Education

Despite being relatively new, AI has already found multiple applications in surgical education, benefiting both learners and educators.

The rapid pace of medical advancements inundates students with a constant stream of new information.

AI helps students filter and prioritize relevant articles, making it easier to stay up-to-date with the latest research in their areas of interest.

AI assists learners in creating effective study routines, generating personalized study materials like flashcards, quizzes, and practice scenarios, and preparing for surgical cases with details on operative steps, indications, complications, and postoperative evaluation.

It streamlines literature searches and bibliography generation for research projects, even facilitating the translation of materials from other languages, broadening the scope of available articles.

AI can enhance the application process for residency programs by identifying ideal candidates based on personal statements, recommendation letters, and work-life experiences, going beyond standardized test scores and publications.

AI also has the potential to assess feedback and resident performance data objectively, enabling educators to adapt their teaching strategies based on areas of deficiency.
